Ghana: Mobile Users Top 25 Million

The number of mobile phone users in Ghana has risen to over 25 million to 25.62 million through the end of last year, the National Communications Authority (NCA) said in a published report.
According to the regulator, last year telecom operators added some 4.35 million new subscribers.
It said that MTN, the country’s leading operator has a 46 percent share, with a subscriber base of 11.73 million, followed by Vodafone with 5.26 million or a 21 percent market share.

Tigo grew marginally to just under 3.7 million customers or 14 percent of the market, and Airtel added over 400,000 customers to reach 3.19 million, the report stated.
New market entrant Glo finished the year with 1.57 million subscribers, good for a 6 percent market share. The country’s total fixed lines stood at 284,981 at end-2012, up from 276,808 at the start of the year, the report continued.
Industry analysts hope that the focus on development of infrastructure, particularly within rural areas, will lead to an increase in mobile penetration levels.
