Two minor girls raped in India, one killed...fuels new protests in India

Two six-year-old school girls have been raped, one strangled to death, in the latest horrendous sex crime to plague Asia’s third largest economy.
Indian students carry banners as they take part in a protest rally in Kolkata on December 29, 2012, after the death of a gang rape victim from in the capital New Delhi.
Police said the body of a young girl was found bleeding in an under-construction building in Ranchi district of the eastern state of Jharkhand on Thursday. The victim’s neck and feet had been tied with a string.

"Prima facie it appears that the child was raped. We are waiting for the medical report for confirmation," the deputy superintendent of the local police force said.

The girl went missing shortly after she returned from school on Wednesday.

“She went out to play in the neighborhood after she came back from school but went missing half an hour later,” a family member said.

The girl's father started a search with the help of friends and relatives when he knew about his daughter’s disappearance.

They carried out the search all day and through the night. When they finally found her, it was too late.

A second six-year-old girl was raped in the capital New Delhi.

"The 6-year-old was alone at home on Tuesday night when her neighbor approached her. He took the girl to a secluded spot and allegedly raped her. He then threatened her and left," a senior police officer said on condition of anonymity.

The incidents come days after the brutal torture and rape of a five-year-old girl in New Delhi.

The girl was abducted by her neighbor on April 15.

She was held in a room for 48 hours and was raped several times, before a passerby who heard her moaning rescued her.

A 22-year-old man, identified as Manoj Kumar, has been arrested from Muzaffarpur district in the eastern state of Bihar - located about 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) east of New Delhi - in connection with the rape.

The sexual assault on the little girl evoked memories of the horrific gang rape by six men of a 23-year-old medical student on a moving bus on December 16, 2012, in New Delhi. She succumbed to her injuries in a hospital in Singapore on December 29.

The horrific nature of the crime shocked Indians, who thronged the streets, demanding protection for women and capital punishment for rape, which currently carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.
