Ghana: Three Car-Snatchers Grabbed in Cape Coast

The Central Regional Police Command has arrested a gang of armed robbers who snatched cars in Accra and had moved to the Cape Coast Metropolis to ply their activities.

Three members of the gang who were arrested during a swoop by the police are Ebenezer Boison, 25 (a.k.a Nana), Gabriel Ikechukwu, 30 (a.k.a Gabby), a Nigerian, and Robert Mensah, 25 (a.k.a Chief), a driver.

Two other suspects, Raphael Appiah (a.k.a Pee) and Bright, a Nigerian, are on the run and the public is advised to assist the police to apprehend them.

Briefing the press in Cape Coast yesterday, the Central Regional Police Commander, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCOP) Mr Ransford Moses Ninson, said the Intelligence Unit of the Kotokuraba Police, acting on a tip off, succeeded in arresting the three suspects at about 1:30 am on Saturday, May 11, while they were driving one of the vehicles they had stolen in Accra.

The regional police commander said one unbranded pistol, a taxi top light, a steering wheel cover, a commercial car side address sticker- bearing the name of Moses Kpentey of P.O.Box 353535, Achimota, Accra- and a Driver Vehicle and Licensing Authority registration number GW 4478-13 were retrieved from the suspects during a search.

He said further investigations led to the recovery of two taxicabs, which the suspects had snatched and brought to Cape Coast to re-spray and sell. The vehicles were parked at their hideout.

The two taxicabs are a Nissan Almera with chassis number SGNFAANI6U019234, without a number plate, and a Toyota Corolla with chassis number INXBR12EX1Z429911, also without a number plate.

DCOP Ninson appealed to members of the public who had fallen victim to the activities of criminals to report at the Regional Police Headquarters with their documents for identification.

He reminded the general public that crime-fighting was a shared responsibility of the police and the community and entreated the public to be alert and inform the police of any suspicious characters who trailed them or loitered around in their communities.

The commander assured members of the public that the police would not disclose the identity of those who would volunteer information to any senior police officer or any station officer.

He stressed that the police could succeed only if the public co-operated with them and impressed on the public to relay information they came across to police personnel who patrolled their communities.
