Use of Marijuana getting out of control in Ghana-NACOB

The Narcotic Control Board (NACOB) has warned that distribution and use of marijuana in Ghana has escalated to alarming proportions, which if not regulated, could have serious consequences on the future of the youth in Ghana.

According to the Executive Secretary of NACOB, Yaw Akrasi Sarpong, the accessibility of marijuana is so high that children as young as 10 years abuse it.

In an interview with Citi News, Mr. Sarpong called on parents and civil society groups to get on board to fight the menace.

“For us, marijuana is a major problem. Our number one threat is marijuana,” he said.

Mr Sarpong lamented that it was a disturbing factor because it cut across social classes and had immense influence on peer pressure.

According to him, “Now they grow it in their rooms, they grow it on their rooftops so it is a major challenge.”

Yaw Akrasi Sarpong noted that according to NACOB records, drugs such as cocaine and heroin were currently not as threatening to the country as marijuana.
