Ghana New Airports terminal to cost US$200 million

The Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) has said expansion of the entire terminal building -- Terminal one and two will cost an estimated US$206 million.

Of the said amount, US$200 million and US$0.06 million is required for the expansion of Terminal 2 (T2) and Terminal 1 (T1) respectively.

The project forms part of a master-plan programme initiated to take into account the airport growth over a 20-year period, under Phase III of the Kotoka International Airport Development Project.

The GACL has completed design works for remodelling the entire terminal building to ease traffic. This, when completed, will provide 56 check-in counters, six aerobridges, and a state-of-the-art baggage handling system. The present footprint of Terminal 2 -- which is 25,000m2 -- will be expanded to 62,300m2.

Other on-going projects under Phase III include the construction of new parking aprons and taxiway -- which costs an estimated US$16.4 million. This is expected to create 8 additional parking spaces for wide-bodied aircraft.

The Phase III Project includes reconstruction of taxiway/apron pavements; provision of a taxiway aeronautical ground lighting system; reconstruction of airside drains; extension of fuel mains systems from the new passenger apron through the dedicated freight apron; rehabilitation of touch-down zone and construction of a new fire station. The fire station has since been completed.
