Jailed Ghanaian Journalist Ken Kuranchie ‘missing’ from Prisons

According to JoyNews-The whereabouts of incarcerated journalist, Kenneth Agyei Kuranchie is unknown, according to Deputy Director of Communications of the New Patriotic Party, Sammy Awuku.

The Managing Editor of the Daily Searchlight newspaper was slapped with a 10-Day jail term by judges of the Supreme Court last Tuesday following publication of materials the judges deemed contemptuous.

He was subsequently moved to the Ho Central Prisons in the Volta Region.

Officials of the Prison on Friday afternoon prevented some members of the party from seeing him on the grounds that he had exceeded his quota of visitors.

But Sammy Awuku told Joy News they are worried about his safety.

“We left there around 11:30-12 [pm], only for us to be called by his nephew…that they’ve moved Ken again so the lunch that he was taking to Ken; Ken couldn’t take it. And so they just asked him to take the food back home and that Mr. Kuranchie is no longer there…they’ve moved him to an undisclosed location,” Mr, Awuku narrated .

According to Sammy Awuku, when Ken’s nephew enquired of his whereabouts, they [Prison Officers] “told him that order from above and they cannot give him any further information”.
