Ghana government set for a new International Airport

Government of Ghana says the ground is set for the Tamale Airport to be transformed into an international standard.

Minister of Transport, Mrs Dzifa Aku Attivor made this known in an interview with Kwami Sefa-Kayi on Tuesday’s edition of Kokrokoo, a flagship programme on Peace FM.

According to her, the funds as well as plans for the re-construction have been provided, adding, there is nothing to stop the conversion.

“We want to convert Tamale Airport into an international standard so that in situations of emergency at the Kotoka International Airport, there will be no difficulty. The drawings are ready and funding has been secured and it will not be long before the work will start…” she indicated.

The country’s airport especially that of Kotoka International Airport and Kumasi Airport, has been facing various challenges which has become very disturbing to people travelling in and out of Accra as well as out of the country.

Speaking on the issue, she said government is working assiduously to ensure that all those challenges come to an end.

According to her, the runway of the Kumasi airport has developed some cracks “but we are working on it. In the medium term, we are going to do a parallel runway…with the Kotoka International Airport, due to the migration of 16 airlines to 35, there has been a lot of pressure on the existing facilities; the arrival hall is crowded and other challenges but we want to assure Ghanaians that government is working on it”

She also added that to ease the pressure on the Kotoka International Airport, government is determined to start a new airport at the Dangme West District of the Greater Accra Region.

Mrs Dzifa Attivor intimated that surveyors are already on the site, conducting feasibility studies to ascertain if an airport can be constructed in the district.
