Chelsea moving in right direction, insists José Mourinho

José Mourinho insists that Chelsea are making good progress this season, despite watching his side crash out of the League Cup at Sunderland on Tuesday.

The Blues were beaten by Ki Sung-Yueng’s extra-time winner as they lost 2-1 to the relegation-threatened Black Cats at the Stadium of Light in the quarter-finals.

Chelsea’s leaky defence has been a cause of concern for the west Londoners this season, with Mourinho’s side having already conceded 18 league goals – more than they shipped in the whole campaign as they won the title in 2004-05.

But Mourinho is not planning to change his side’s approach this season.“We want this team to play the way we are playing,” Mourinho said.

“We want this team to have evolution but based on the way we are playing at the moment we have to finish opponents and we need goals to do that.

“Maybe the way to rectify it is to not concede goals and to have a different approach, to be more defensive, concede fewer goals and win matches with the few goals we score – but that’s not what I want.

“We are going in one direction which is the right direction in terms of the quality of football we want to play, so it would be quite frustrating to change that, take a step back and go in another direction just because we want better results.”
