ATTENTION !! Hong Kong issues warning on new bird flu strain

The Hong Kong government is stepping up inspection at border checkpoints, as news of at least two deaths from a new strain of avian flu in mainland China reverberates in the city.

Health Secretary Ko Wing Man on Monday issued warnings about H7N9, saying he is concerned that the virus had mutated and could be spread between humans.

He also said that he is seeking more information from mainland health authorities about the strain which has been found in humans for the first time.

The Chinese government said over the weekend that two men, one aged 87 and the other 27, had died in Shanghai after being infected with H7N9. A 35-year-old woman in the eastern province of Anhui, near Shanghui, is in critical condition.
