Green, 42, became the first Briton to be fitted with an artificial heart in 2011 as he embarked on a long wait for a donor.
The pharmaceutical consultant was suffering from Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Cardiomyopathy (ARVC) that necessitated a heart transplant surgery but without any available donor, he was fitted with a ‘plastic’ heart, a portable battery-powered pump that was attached by tubes to his chest and had to be carried around in a bag.
Green, who underwent the surgery at the Papworth Hospital in Cambridgeshire and is expected to be discharged soon, thanked the donor’s family for giving him a third chance at life. “I feel incredibly lucky that I have been given a third lease of life as a result of my heart transplant. It’s hard to put into words the gratitude I feel to my donor and their family. They have helped me turn my life around again”, he said.
